MIND LIKE SKY, BODY LIKE MOUNTAIN, HEART LIKE SUN

Oct 19, 2018

Let me just share what I learned ‘down under’. I was invited to teach elements of the Mindfulness-Based Compassionate Living program to healthcare professionals in Australia and NZ. I thoroughly enjoyed the teaching experience and just as much what I learned from them.

I saw a wonderful example how staff can support each other in their stressful jobs. Nickolas Yu and colleagues at Sydney Local Health District set up a secular, science-informed program called Meditation-based Wellness and Compassion (MWAC). They train motivated staff to become meditation facilitators, who then regularly offer mindfulness and compassion practices to their colleagues in the workplace. Thus hundreds of employees can experience the benefits of these practices in an unforced way. I was impressed by their shared commitment and their simple powerful didactic tools, with strong metaphors and touching visuals. MWAC is introduced across several health districts in Australia and NZ and researched in a controlled study. I'm so pleased there are policymakers funding projects like this, aimed at sustainable effects on staff wellness and compassionate care.

Does anybody wish to share about similar initiatives?
